The Ohio State football team was disappointed with being seeded eighth in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. They felt they deserved a higher ranking but were placed behind Boise State and Arizona State—both of whom earned automatic first-round byes as conference champions.
However, many fans questioned why those teams, seen as unlikely national title contenders, received such a major advantage. Despite the frustration, the Buckeyes focused on the games and delivered one of the most remarkable playoff performances in history, defeating Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame to win the national championship.

Now, changes to the CFP format should work in Ohio State’s favor. The new system eliminates automatic byes for conference champions and instead uses straightforward seeding based on rankings. This shift benefits powerhouse programs like Ohio State, who are expected to be among the top seeds most years—as long as they perform well.
Had this rule been in place in 2024, the Buckeyes likely wouldn’t have been seeded eighth and faced such a challenging playoff path. With a more favorable route ahead under the new format, fans are optimistic about Ohio State securing the No. 1 overall seed in 2025 and making another strong title run.
