The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a major challenge after closer José Alvarado was recently handed an 80-game suspension. This unexpected setback has left the team scrambling to find a solution at the back end of the bullpen. While there may be internal candidates ready to step up, many around the league believe the Phillies will look externally for reinforcements.
“I think they’ll make a move to replace [Alvarado],” an NL executive told Mark Feinsand. “It might not be for a true closer, but they’ll definitely try to bolster their bullpen depth.”

One notable name on the Phillies’ radar is veteran free agent David Robertson, who has had two previous stints in Philadelphia. According to Feinsand, the team contacted Robertson before news of Alvarado’s suspension became public. While no serious negotiations have occurred yet, a reunion remains a possibility.
Beyond Robertson, other potential trade targets include Miami Marlins reliever Anthony Bender. He’s posted a 1.89 ERA in 19 appearances and is under team control through 2027. Miami has shown a willingness to make early-season moves, as evidenced by last year’s Luis Arraez trade.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Dennis Santana is another intriguing option. The right-hander has a 1.96 ERA and four saves this year, with two more arbitration years before reaching free agency. Baltimore’s Bryan Baker (2.37 ERA, 25 strikeouts in 19 innings) could also be a target, especially if the Orioles are open to capitalizing on his strong start.
With the Phillies off to a strong start this season and carrying high expectations, replacing Alvarado has become a pressing priority. There are several viable options available, and how the front office responds could have a major impact on the rest of their campaign.
