Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” could be the fitting soundtrack as a veteran MLB infielder calls it a career.

He, former St. Louis Cardinals second baseman, announced his retirement from Major League Baseball over the weekend while speaking with local media at the University of Hawaii, his alma mater. Wong, who was in town to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors game, said he’s ready to prioritize family life, especially his two children.

“I think I’m done at this point,” Wong said, according to Brian McInnis of Spectrum News Hawaii. “I’ve accepted that I’m probably going to hang it up. The game’s changing, and it doesn’t make sense to keep chasing it. I’m a dad now, and I want to be the best major league dad I can be.”

Now 34, Wong debuted in MLB with the Cardinals in 2013 and played with them through 2020. Although he was initially remembered for a baserunning blunder in the 2013 World Series, he later redeemed himself with strong playoff performances and won back-to-back Gold Gloves at second base in 2019 and 2020.

He continued his career with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2021 to 2022, batting .262 during that span. Wong later had short stints with the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, appearing in his final MLB game with the Dodgers in 2023. He signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024 but did not make it back to the majors.

Wong, who recently made headlines with critical comments about Orioles prospect Jackson Holliday, wraps up an 11-year MLB career having earned over $47 million. Now, he’s turning the page to focus on family and life after baseball.
