The Boston Red Sox find themselves just one game above .500 following a lopsided defeat to the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Despite a high-profile offseason that raised expectations for a postseason run, the team’s hopes have been hampered by injuries and internal turmoil.

Key among the setbacks is a season-ending knee injury to first baseman Triston Casas. Making matters worse, star slugger Rafael Devers has refused to step in at first base. After Monday’s rough outing, the Red Sox are now reportedly weighing a significant decision involving one of their top pitchers.

Tanner Houck, a reigning All-Star, was shelled for 11 earned runs over just 2 1/3 innings against Detroit, raising his ERA to 8.04. After the game, Houck made a candid confession.

“This is probably the most lost I’ve ever felt,” he admitted to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I’m just not getting it done, and it’s really weighing on me.”

Hunter Dobbins impresses in 2 starts for Red Sox

Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the team is considering removing Houck from the starting rotation while they investigate his steep decline.

“We’ll definitely talk it over,” Cora said, indicating Houck might miss his next start. “I need to review the video and figure out our next steps.”

In the interim, the Red Sox could call up rookie Hunter Dobbins and are expecting Walker Buehler to make his return as early as next week.
