Breaking News: “Controversial Steal” Steelers to add another backfield depth piece

The Pittsburgh Steelers still haven’t locked down their long-term quarterback solution. Many fans were hoping for clarity by now, but unless Aaron Rodgers unexpectedly joins the team, Mason Rudolph appears to be the guy under center.

This situation is frustrating, especially considering the talent the Steelers have at receiver with DK Metcalf and George Pickens (at least for now). The silver lining lies in their run-first identity, which could carry the offense.

Last season, Pittsburgh averaged 127.4 rushing yards per game—just outside the NFL’s top 10. Arthur Smith’s system provides a run-heavy foundation for an offense still searching for a true franchise quarterback.

The team reinforced this approach in the draft, selecting Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson in the third round. Johnson is expected to share the backfield duties with veteran Jaylen Warren.

Still, the Steelers might consider adding another piece to make their backfield even stronger.

One intriguing option is former Browns star Nick Chubb, who remains a free agent following the main waves of offseason moves. Curt Popejoy of Steelers Wire suggests Chubb could be a valuable addition.

Browns have a terrible way of showing Nick Chubb they want him back

“Chubb is working hard to return and, if healthy, would be the most talented back on the roster. With Pittsburgh committed to the run game in 2025, pairing him with Warren and Johnson could create a dynamic trio,” Popejoy said.

Chubb has been sharing workout videos this offseason, showing he’s determined to earn another shot. However, there’s little buzz around a potential signing.

If he gets another opportunity, it’ll likely be as a secondary or rotational back—anything more could stir up controversy.

Still, in this system, Chubb could thrive in a complementary role. If not, the Steelers can still rely on Warren and Johnson to carry the load.
