The New York Mets’ pitching staff has been plagued by injuries lately, and the setbacks keep piling up. The latest blow affects their bullpen, as left-hander will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season—a significant loss for a team already lacking left-handed relievers.
Young was placed on the injured list last Wednesday after an MRI showed a sprained left elbow. The situation became more concerning when he was moved to the 60-day IL on Sunday, with confirmation of the surgery following soon after.

This comes on the heels of another major loss, as fellow lefty A.J. Minter landed on the IL with a lat injury that may also require season-ending surgery, worsening an already difficult scenario for the Mets.

After a challenging journey to reach the majors, Young finally made his MLB debut in 2022, splitting time between the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves. He had a brief stint with Atlanta in 2023 before landing with the Mets, where he established himself in their bullpen. That season, he appeared in 43 games, recording a 4.54 ERA and striking out 48 batters over 37.2 innings.

Young secured another major league roster spot this year, and in his first 10 appearances, he posted a 4.32 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Known as a left-handed specialist, he’s consistently performed better against lefties, holding them to a .609 OPS compared to .735 against right-handers. With Minter sidelined, the Mets had hoped Young could step up in his absence—but now, he too is out for the season.
With the 2025 campaign just underway, the Mets will need to address their bullpen depth soon, particularly if Minter requires surgery for his injury. Young acknowledged the unfortunate timing of his own setback, noting that the team was already struggling before this latest blow.
“The timing couldn’t be worse,” Young said. “It’s tough. I wanted to step up and help out, but this is the situation we’re in now.”
Mets Recall Dedniel Nunez to Majors in Wake of Danny Young Injury

With Young sidelined, manager Carlos Mendoza will need to be inventive in managing his bullpen each night. To temporarily fill the gap, the team called up Dedniel Nunez from Triple-A for Sunday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Nunez performed well during his 2024 MLB debut, recording a 2.31 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 25 appearances.
However, since Nunez is a right-hander, he doesn’t serve as a direct replacement for the left-handed Young. Brooks Raley could become an option later in the season as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but the team requires immediate bullpen support. How they address this setback will be a key storyline moving forward.
