The Los Angeles Chargers bolstered their offense in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton with the 22nd overall pick, giving quarterback Justin Herbert another key weapon.

On Tuesday, the team revealed the jersey numbers for their rookie class, beginning with Hampton. Though he wore No. 28 at North Carolina, he’ll sport No. 8 in the NFL, as that number is currently taken by backup running back Hassan Haskins.

The other rookie jersey numbers are as follows: wide receiver Tre Harris will wear No. 9; defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell, No. 99; edge rusher Kyle Kennard, No. 54; wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith, No. 84; tight end Oronde Gadsden II, No. 86; offensive lineman Branson Taylor, No. 71; safety R.J. Mickens, No. 27; and cornerback Trikweze Bridges, No. 31. The team shared the update on X with the caption “Rookie digits.”

Hampton was a standout at UNC, leading the ACC in both rushing yards and attempts in each of the past two seasons. He finished his college career with 3,565 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Hampton, calling him a complete back who excels on third down, can catch passes out of the backfield, and offers strong pass protection.

“He’s a bigger back at 220 pounds but still runs in the 4.4s. Just a really well-rounded player,” Harbaugh said. “We were unanimous on him—if he was there at 22, we were going to take him.”

In addition to drafting Hampton, the Chargers added veteran running back Najee Harris in free agency earlier this offseason. They also placed a rare unrestricted free-agent tender on J.K. Dobbins, giving the team exclusive negotiating rights if he remains unsigned when training camp begins.
