The 2025 NFL Draft has wrapped up, and former North Carolina stars were heavily involved throughout the weekend.

Leading the group, Omarion Hampton was selected 22nd overall by the Los Angeles Chargers, making him the first Tar Heel drafted and the second running back off the board. Later, another UNC alum made news—this time through a trade.

He was dealt to the Minnesota Vikings following a third-round pick swap. The Seattle Seahawks, Howell’s former team, sent him and pick No. 172 to Minnesota in exchange for pick No. 142.

This will be the third team for Howell, 24, since entering the NFL. Drafted by Washington at No. 144 overall in 2022, he saw limited action as a rookie before starting in 2023, throwing for 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.

Sam Howell - Minnesota Vikings Quarterback - ESPN

Despite struggles behind a weak offensive line, Washington finished 4-13, and Howell was traded to Seattle last March. With the Seahawks, he played sparingly, attempting just 14 passes across three games.

Now joining the Vikings under head coach Kevin O’Connell, Howell enters a quarterback room featuring JJ McCarthy and Brett Rypien. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in 2024, is expected to be the starter this fall.

Howell, who still possesses notable potential, is projected to serve as the backup. Minnesota has shown success in revitalizing quarterback careers, as seen with Sam Darnold last season. There’s hope that Howell can settle in, grow, and possibly develop into a dependable backup or even a future starter.

Wishing you all the best, Sam!
