The New York Mets and their fans have had plenty to smile about to start the season. With a league-best 19 wins, the Mets currently enjoy a five-game cushion over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.

A major factor behind their strong start has been their outstanding pitching staff, which ranks as the best in the majors. However, despite the early success, New York has already battled through a series of injuries.

Now, it appears the Mets will lose a key piece of their bullpen. Veteran left-hander A.J. Minter exited late in Saturday’s game with what was later diagnosed as a triceps injury, according to SNY Mets.

Following the game, manager Carlos Mendoza spoke with reporters about Minter’s situation (via SNY).

“When a pitcher leaves the game with an arm issue, even if the initial news is positive, you still have to be cautious,” Mendoza said. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions; we need to see exactly what we’re dealing with.”

Minter also addressed the media, admitting that a trip to the injured list is likely.

Minter has been a valuable pickup for the Mets after spending his first eight seasons with the rival Atlanta Braves. He joined New York this offseason on a one-year, $11 million contract.

Through 10.2 innings this season, Minter has been excellent, posting a 1.69 ERA, allowing no home runs, and carrying a 0.938 WHIP. The Mets are hopeful he’ll make a quick and smooth return following his IL stint.
