ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Masyn Winn exited Friday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies with lower back spasms.
Winn took the field in the first inning but didn’t return for the second.
To adjust, the Cardinals shifted catcher Pedro Pagés to second base, despite his only previous major league experience being at catcher and first base.
Rookie Thomas Saggese, who started the game at second base, slid over to shortstop.
Meanwhile, rookie Yohel Pozo entered the game as catcher and slotted into Winn’s No. 9 spot in the batting order. Pozo, who has appeared in 22 MLB games, made his Cardinals debut Monday—his first big league appearance since 2021.
