The New York Rangers have repeatedly failed to capitalize on key opportunities this season, most recently suffering a combined 9-1 defeat over their last two games—despite still being in the playoff hunt.
With just five games remaining, their chances of making the postseason are virtually gone.
At this point, the focus has shifted to evaluating young talent, particularly top prospect Gabe Perreault.

The 19-year-old standout from the college ranks signed with the Rangers last week and made his NHL debut on April 2 against the Minnesota Wild. Fans were eager to see him skate in a top-six role, hoping he’d gain valuable experience alongside veteran teammates and begin adjusting his game to the NHL level.
Reportedly, Perreault only agreed to sign if he could immediately contribute at the NHL level rather than spending time in the AHL or being relegated to limited ice time. Signing now also meant using up the first year of his three-year entry-level contract despite the few remaining games.
However, head coach Peter Laviolette announced on Wednesday that Perreault would be scratched in favor of bottom-six forward Brett Berard.

“Coaches will sit down with him and review his impact so far, and areas he can improve,” Laviolette said. “It’s all part of the learning curve—practices, games, video, observing. Jumping from college straight into the NHL is a big step. Other young players are also being rotated in as we evaluate.”

The decision sparked outrage among fans.
“Firing offense from Laviolette and Drury,” one X user posted. “Signing Perreault without the intention to play him? Disgraceful. Incompetent beyond belief.”
Another added, “Kids don’t improve from the bench—this is delusional.”
A third fan chimed in, “Absurd. The season’s done—let the kid play. Laviolette should be gone. Drury wrecked the team’s chemistry with his offseason moves and internal drama. The whole thing’s a clown show, and unfortunately, it’s not getting better anytime soon.”
The Rangers face off against the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:30 p.m. ET, currently trailing a playoff spot by eight points with five games left.
