Indianapolis Colts free-agent linebacker is set to sign a one-year, $5 million contract with the Houston Texans, according to Jordan Schultz.
There was speculation about whether the Colts would re-sign the former fifth-round pick, but Speed, who has played the last six seasons in Indianapolis, will now stay within the AFC South in 2025 with the Texans.

Speed became a full-time starter in 2024 after an increase in playing time in 2023. Over the past three seasons, he recorded 26 tackles-for-loss and 122 run stops. In 2024, Speed achieved a career-high 142 tackles, along with seven tackles-for-loss, one interception, and five pass deflections, per ESPN.

The Colts will need to find a replacement for Speed, and this will be an area to watch closely. With new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo on board, Indianapolis has shown a willingness to bring in key defensive talent.
They may look to the NFL Draft for a replacement, with prospects like Alabama’s Jihaad Campbell and UCLA’s Carson Schwesinger mentioned in mock drafts as potential options for April. Both players could be intriguing fits for Anarumo and the coaching staff.
Alternatively, the Colts could look to second-year linebacker and former fifth-round pick Jaylon Carlies. After converting from safety to linebacker last offseason, Carlies showed promise with 24 solo tackles and one sack last season.
His background as a safety could make him particularly effective in coverage, possibly making him an appealing option for Anarumo and the team.
Whether the Colts opt for an internal candidate, a veteran free agent, or a draft pick, they have several avenues to explore in finding their new starting WILL linebacker for 2025.
