Done Deal: Chargers officially toss their fans with latest addition

The Chargers’ need for interior offensive line reinforcements became evident after Justin Herbert endured relentless pressure from the Texans’ defensive front in the AFC Wild Card Round. Entering the 2025 season with the same starting unit would have been seen as a major shortcoming.

Following a slow start to free agency, the Chargers made their first move by signing right guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year deal. Now, they have added another key piece to the line, securing former Raiders center Andre James.

Chargers sign their new starting center in former Raider, Andre James

James was released by the Raiders earlier this offseason following a disappointing 2024 campaign, but that wasn’t enough to dissuade the Chargers from taking a chance on the four-year starter’s potential.

Why Andre James Los Angeles Chargers SIGNING Could Change EVERYTHING...

His struggles last season came after a career-best 2023, where, while not at an All-Pro level, he was still among the league’s better starting centers. In 2024, James allowed 17 total pressures and recorded a 97.7 pass-block efficiency rating. By comparison, Bradley Bozeman surrendered 30 pressures (on more snaps) with a 97.3 efficiency rating. Bozeman ranked 23rd out of 28 qualified centers in pass-block efficiency, while James finished 20th—suggesting that even in a down year, he performed better than some.

However, James’ 2023 numbers were significantly stronger, as he tied for ninth among 31 qualified centers in pass-block efficiency. While that shows he can perform at a high level, it’s worth noting that before his breakout 2023 season, his play had been closer to average.

With his addition, the Chargers’ offensive line is expected to feature Rashawn Slater, Zion Johnson, James, Mekhi Becton, and rookie Joe Alt—a group with significantly more potential than last year’s unit.

James is projected to start at center in Week 1, but he may have to secure the role in training camp. The Chargers clearly see value in Bozeman, having re-signed him, so James will need to prove he can return to his 2023 form. If he does, he could be a major asset for Justin Herbert and the offense.
