BREAKING NEWS: Understand Bengals Retooling Priority Set To Land Defensive Player Of The Year

The 2024 season was a disappointing one for the Cincinnati Bengals, as they finished with a 9-8 record, placed third in the AFC North, and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

A key factor in their struggles was the defense, which ended the season ranked 25th in total yards allowed per game and tied for 25th in points allowed per game (25.6).

To address these defensive issues, Cory Woodruff of For The Win predicts that the Bengals will sign veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. A five-time Pro Bowler and the 2019 AP Defensive Player of the Year, Gilmore could bring much-needed experience to Cincinnati’s secondary.

In 2024, the Bengals’ pass defense had its share of struggles, surrendering 372 completions (13th most), 3,799 yards (12th most), 30 touchdowns (fourth most), and a 91.9 passer rating (17th highest).

Gilmore, who played for the Minnesota Vikings last season, had a solid year, starting 15 games and recording 56 tackles, one tackle for loss, nine pass deflections, and one interception. However, he faced challenges in coverage, allowing 52 completions for 596 yards, 7.1 yards per target, four touchdowns, and a 94.1 passer rating.

If Gilmore can return to his 2022 form—when he was targeted 89 times, allowing just 50 receptions for 577 yards, four touchdowns, and a much-improved 74 passer rating—he could be a valuable addition to the Bengals’ defense.
