The Mets have recently strengthened their bullpen with the additions of Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek, but they are still exploring further acquisitions. According to Tim Britton and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets have shown interest in White Sox right-hander John Brebbia. Additionally, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that New York has discussed southpaw Tanner Banks with Chicago. While these White Sox relievers are typically used in middle innings or setup roles, FanSided’s Robert Murray notes that the Mets are also interested in top rental closer Tanner Scott.

Brebbia and Scott are both likely to be traded soon, as they are impending free agents on last-place teams. Brebbia’s contract includes a $6 million mutual option with a $1.5 million buyout, which is unlikely to be exercised. Despite his 5.71 ERA, Brebbia has impressive underlying statistics, striking out nearly 30% of batters faced and walking just 6.6%. His high .346 BABIP has contributed to his poor ERA, but his ability to miss bats should secure him a middle relief role with a contender.

Tanner Banks is a less obvious trade candidate due to his long-term team control. However, at 32 years old on a rebuilding White Sox team, his future role is uncertain. Banks is having a solid 2024 season with a 4.13 ERA, striking out nearly 27% of hitters and walking 7.3% over 48 innings. He remains two seasons away from arbitration eligibility.

Tanner Scott is a more prominent target, attracting interest from many contenders. The hard-throwing lefty has an impressive 29.1% strikeout rate and a 1.18 ERA over 45 2/3 innings for the Marlins, converting 18 of 20 save opportunities. Acquiring Scott would be a more challenging endeavor for the Mets.
