The Denver Broncos were one of the standout teams of the 2024 NFL season. Under head coach Sean Payton in his second year, the Broncos finished 10-7, securing a spot in the AFC Wild Card round. While much of the attention went to rookie quarterback Bo Nix, it was the Broncos’ impressive defense that truly carried the team.

Denver ranked second in the league for yards allowed per play, only behind the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles, and third in points allowed per game, trailing only the Eagles and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The defense also forced the seventh-most turnovers, with 25. This strong defensive performance took another step forward on Thursday when the Broncos hired Todd Davis as a defensive quality control coach.

Before joining the Broncos’ staff, Davis was a full-time member of the DNVR Podcast, covering local sports. However, he’s no stranger to football. At 32, Davis is a former seven-year NFL veteran, having played under Sean Payton in New Orleans in 2014 before spending five years with the Broncos (2014-2019).

Denver Broncos news: Todd Davis returns to team as a coach

In 2019, Davis recorded a career-high 136 tackles and led the Broncos in that category before retiring just two years later. After taking a few years off, he ventured into the media world and also worked as a coaching intern for Denver and Payton last year.

“I feel great,” Davis told the Denver Gazette. “I’m really excited and thankful for the opportunity and ready to get to work.”

Though his hiring may seem unconventional, Payton has a history of identifying coaching talent. With Davis’s experience and background, it wouldn’t be surprising if he quickly advanced through the coaching ranks in the NFL.
