Head coach Shane Steichen recently told reporters that the Indianapolis Colts plan to continue using quarterback Anthony Richardson’s mobility, despite the physical challenges he faced as a rookie last season.

Steichen’s approach appears to have the support of Colts owner Jim Irsay. When asked if Richardson should change his playing style, Irsay responded that he doesn’t think so, noting that injuries are a risk in a physical game. Irsay mentioned that Richardson’s season-ending shoulder injury could have occurred at any time and emphasized that the team drafted Richardson for his ability to make plays with his legs, as well as his potential to make critical plays.

How Should Indianapolis Colts Build Around Anthony Richardson?

Richardson had limited opportunities before his injury, with just 25 carries for 136 yards and four touchdowns, and completed 50 of 84 passes for 577 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Irsay also noted that the Colts didn’t get to see Richardson and star running back Jonathan Taylor play together last season, as Taylor missed the first four games before signing a three-year, $42M contract extension.

Irsay is excited about the potential of Richardson and Taylor as a dynamic duo, believing their speed and playmaking ability could be a major asset for the Colts’ offense. The Colts seem committed to letting Richardson use both his arm and legs to attack defenses while also focusing on protecting himself from injury.
