BREAKING NEWS: “Spring Training Cuts” Mariners confirmed another departure

The Seattle Mariners made their first round of roster cuts for major league spring training on Sunday morning.

The team reassigned right-handed pitchers Tyler Cleveland and Hunter Cranton, left-handed pitcher Peyton Alford, and catchers Josh Caron and Connor Charping to minor league camp. Additionally, the Mariners released right-handed pitcher Dauris Valdez.

Following these moves, Seattle’s major league camp now consists of 69 players, including 29 non-roster invitees.

Player Performances:

  • Tyler Cleveland (RHP, 25): In two spring appearances, he walked four batters but allowed no hits, surrendering an unearned run while striking out two over 1 2/3 innings. Last season, he made 37 minor league appearances, primarily at High-A Everett, where he posted a 3.38 ERA in 36 relief outings.
  • Hunter Cranton (RHP, 24): The 2024 third-round draft pick has yet to pitch in a game this spring. Last season, he made nine relief appearances for High-A Modesto, finishing with a 3.24 ERA over 8 1/3 innings and ranking as the Mariners’ No. 30 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s year-end rankings.
  • Peyton Alford (LHP, 27): In two spring relief outings, he gave up three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two in 1 1/3 innings. He had a strong 2023 season with Double-A Arkansas, going 8-2 with a 2.20 ERA and seven saves over 57 1/3 innings.
  • Josh Caron (C, 21): The 2024 fourth-round pick went 0-for-3 with a walk in four spring training games. Last year, he slashed .277/.352/.383 with a homer and 10 RBIs in 13 games at High-A Modesto, ranking as the Mariners’ No. 24 prospect at season’s end.
  • Connor Charping (C, 25): Went 0-for-2 in two spring appearances. In 67 games between Modesto and Everett last season, he hit .276/.408/.364 with 13 doubles, two triples, one home run, and 33 RBIs.
  • Dauris Valdez (RHP, 29): Struggled in two spring appearances, allowing three runs on one hit, four walks, and a hit batter in two-thirds of an inning. His last minor league season came in 2022 with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies in the Cubs’ system.
