The Pittsburgh Steelers were unsuccessful in their attempt to trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel. However, Samuel may not have been their top target.
According to SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey, Denver Broncos wide receiver is the name to watch for Pittsburgh this offseason.
“The Steelers have been interested in Sutton since last offseason, making multiple attempts to negotiate a trade with Denver before and during the 2024 NFL Draft, but were turned down both times. This offseason, though, could be different,” Bailey reported on February 27.
“I’m told it ‘sounds like Courtland Sutton could be heading Pittsburgh’s way,’” Bailey added.
A source also mentioned that Sutton would “love” to reunite with quarterback Russell Wilson, whom he played with in Denver from 2022-23.
Over his seven-year NFL career, Sutton has earned approximately $55 million.
Could the Steelers Finally Acquire Courtland Sutton?
As Bailey mentioned, Sutton has been linked to the Steelers for nearly a year, largely due to his relationship with quarterback Russell Wilson.
During their two seasons together in Denver, Sutton posted two 750-yard campaigns, and in 2023, he added 10 receiving touchdowns to his resume.
Sutton had an even better 2024, setting a career-high with 81 receptions and surpassing 1,000 yards for the first time since his Pro Bowl season in 2019. He also recorded eight touchdowns.
However, Sutton will be a free agent next year, and Denver may view him as expendable even before 2025.
“He’s entering the final year of his contract with the Broncos, and Denver isn’t planning on paying him,” Bailey wrote. “So, moving him for draft capital makes sense for the Broncos.”

“If this happens, a wide receiver duo of Sutton and George Pickens would be a significant upgrade over what the Steelers had last season.”
Bailey’s report, published on February 27, became even more relevant after Samuel was no longer available.
The Washington Commanders traded a fifth-round pick to the 49ers for Samuel, with many speculating that Pittsburgh could have been a potential destination for the 2021 All-Pro receiver.
