The Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly reached an agreement with veteran left-handed starter on a one-year, $5 million contract that includes incentives, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.

Heaney, 33, made his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins in 2014 before spending the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Angels from 2015 to 2021.

Despite showing strong strikeout potential, he struggled with consistency and was unable to fully realize his potential in Anaheim. The Pirates’ decision to sign him suggests they see untapped upside in the left-hander.

During the 2021 season, the Angels traded Heaney to the New York Yankees, where he struggled significantly, posting a 7.32 ERA over 12 appearances (five starts). However, the Los Angeles Dodgers, known for maximizing pitchers’ potential, took a chance on him in 2022.

Though limited to 16 outings (14 starts), Heaney thrived, recording a 3.10 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 72.2 innings. His performance earned him a two-year contract with the Texas Rangers.

While Heaney had flashes of success in Texas, he was unable to replicate his Dodgers form, finishing with an ERA above 4.00 in both 2023 and 2024. Now, he looks to revitalize his career in Pittsburgh.

If the Pirates remain in contention in the competitive NL Central, Heaney could play a role in a postseason push. However, if the team struggles, he may become a trade candidate ahead of the July deadline. Regardless, his veteran presence should provide valuable leadership for Pittsburgh’s young pitching staff.
