The Blue Jays have traded reliever Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs, marking their second trade in as many days. Yesterday, they sent reliever Yimi Garcia to the Seattle Mariners. In return, the Blue Jays are receiving two prospects: outfielder Yohendrick Pinango, a 22-year-old from AA who plays left field, and Josh Rivera, a shortstop who was ranked as the Cubs’ 23rd prospect.

Cubs Acquire Blue Jays Reliever
Pearson Is A Cub
It’s no surprise that the Blue Jays are sellers this season. They’ve now traded Pearson to the Cubs. This season, Pearson has a 0-1 record, a 5.63 ERA, and two saves. He was a top prospect before debuting with Toronto, and it’s unfortunate that things didn’t pan out as expected. Could a new environment help revamp his game? Maybe the Cubs can help him reach his potential. Pearson has the skill set to be a dominant closer, but he couldn’t achieve that with the Blue Jays. A change of scenery might make the difference. Pearson has been with the Blue Jays since 2020, and the Cubs are betting on his turnaround.
Pearson’s best season was in 2023, with a 5-2 record and a 4.85 ERA. Even during the Blue Jays’ 13-0 loss to the Rays, Pearson’s fastball was effective. The Cubs are gaining a reliever with a solid fastball, and if they can help him improve, he could be very effective. The Boston Red Sox were also interested in Pearson. Fans have watched him for years, hoping he would fulfill his early potential. Injuries and missed play have held him back, and time is running out for him to turn things around. At 27 years old, standing 6’6″, and being a right-handed pitcher, he has solid potential in the bullpen and needs a fresh start. The Blue Jays believe Pearson will succeed in a new home. Following the trade, the Blue Jays’ bullpen now includes Chad Green, Erik Swanson, Trevor Richards, Génesis Cabrera, Brendon Little, Zach Pop, and Yerry Rodríguez.
