LATEST: New York Giants clear-cut decision land perfect free-agent quarterback

As the 2025 NFL Draft draws near, the Giants face an important decision: sign a veteran quarterback on a short-term contract while gearing up for a rookie transition.

Acquiring a high-priced veteran like Derek Carr or Matthew Stafford could introduce unnecessary financial strain. Instead, they could opt to sign a free agent for a one-year bridge solution. The goal is to strike the right balance between cost, experience, and the ability to mentor a young quarterback.

Why a Trade Makes No Sense

Stafford and Carr both come with high costs. If the Giants were to trade for either, they’d be committing to a large financial obligation, which would limit their ability to support their future quarterback. This is not ideal for a team in rebuild mode. Rather than tying themselves down with a long-term contract, the Giants should aim for a bridge quarterback—someone who can start right away but won’t restrict their future flexibility.

Revisiting the Russell Wilson Option

Last offseason, the Giants explored the possibility of signing Russell Wilson, but he ultimately opted for Pittsburgh, where he secured a starting role.

Now 36, Wilson still has some quality play left in him. In 2024, he passed for 2,752 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions, completing 64.1% of his throws. While these stats aren’t superstar-level, they’re a significant improvement over what the Giants have had at quarterback for nearly a decade.

At this stage in his career, Wilson likely isn’t chasing a big contract, so the Giants could offer him around $15 million for a one-year deal. If structured correctly, this wouldn’t hinder their future financial plans and would allow for a smooth transition to a rookie quarterback, whether it’s Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward.

Would Wilson Even Want to Join the Giants?

The real question is whether Wilson will consider the Giants. He will likely have other options, and if his goal is to contend right away, New York might not be the best fit. Teams like the Jets, dealing with Aaron Rodgers’ situation, or the Vikings, who might not be ready to fully hand over the reins to J.J. McCarthy, could also be appealing.

However, for the Giants, it makes perfect sense. A veteran like Wilson could provide much-needed stability. While he may not be the long-term answer, he could serve as a bridge quarterback. Although paying a premium for one year might be necessary to secure him, general manager Joe Schoen can’t afford another season with uncertainty at the quarterback position.
