Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta remains one of the more intriguing free agents still available. After the Red Sox bolstered their rotation by acquiring Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet early in the offseason, it seems likely that Pivetta’s time in Boston has come to an end.
Now, the 31-year-old right-hander finds himself navigating the open market with limited direction.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently highlighted the Toronto Blue Jays as a potential destination for Pivetta. According to Spotrac, the pitcher is projected to land a $60 million contract.
“In what feels like a game of ‘One of these things is not like the other,’ the three players who rejected qualifying offers and remain unsigned are Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman … and Nick Pivetta,” Miller noted.
“Over the past four seasons, Pivetta provided solid value to the Red Sox, pitching at least 140 innings each year with an ERA ranging from 4.04 to 4.56.
“Still, it’s unclear if that performance is enough to earn the nearly 32-year-old a three- or four-year deal in free agency. So far, it hasn’t been. The longer he stays unsigned, the more likely he is to accept a ‘one-year plus player option’ type of deal, which has become increasingly popular in recent years.”
While the Blue Jays aren’t in urgent need of starting pitching, their failure to land top stars this offseason makes Pivetta a worthwhile option. If he’s open to signing a two-year deal that aligns with Toronto’s terms, it would be wise for the team to pursue him.
