An MLB insider has become the latest analyst to propose that the Cincinnati Reds should seriously consider signing a star slugger still available in free agency.
The Reds made notable progress during the 2023 season, finishing two games above .500 and achieving a 12-game winning streak, which sparked optimism for a return to the playoffs in 2024—a feat they’ve managed only once in over a decade.
However, the 2024 season was a step backward, with the team winning five fewer games than the previous year. This underperformance led to the dismissal of manager David Bell. To signal their commitment to becoming consistent playoff contenders, the Reds made a bold move by hiring legendary manager Terry Francona, formerly of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians.

Despite speculation that the team would make significant offseason upgrades to the roster for Francona’s first year, the Reds have remained relatively quiet this winter. Earlier this week, MLB Network analyst Yonder Alonso suggested the Reds should pursue four-time All-Star free agent Pete Alonso. Now, New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman has joined the chorus, advocating for the New York Mets slugger as a perfect fit for Cincinnati.
Pete Alonso’s 2024 stats: .240 AVG, .329 OBP, .459 SLG, .788 OPS, 34 HR, 88 RBI, 91 R
Should Cincinnati Reds sign free-agent slugger Pete Alonso?

“On a Bleacher Report livestream Wednesday, Heyman speculated that the Cincinnati Reds might be a good fit for him. ‘Someone like the Reds could use him, and he’s had success there. It’s a great ballpark for a hitter like him,’ Heyman said. ‘It’s probably a long shot—I’m just speculating, as I haven’t heard anything concrete—but it does make sense. Yonder Alonso mentioned this idea on MLB Network, and I think it’s a good suggestion.’
As he entered free agency, the 30-year-old was widely regarded as the best power hitter available this year. However, despite his impressive track record, the market has been lukewarm. Teams, including his current one, are hesitant to commit to a long-term deal for a right-handed first baseman in his 30s.
Pete Alonso’s contract projection stands at five years, $125 million. However, Alonso is reportedly open to a short-term deal with a high annual salary and multiple opt-out options. While that approach might not align with the Mets’ plans, it could interest the Reds, particularly if it includes opt-outs for both parties and sets a record for the highest annual salary for a first baseman.
Great American Ballpark is known for being hitter-friendly, making it an ideal setting for a player like Alonso, who has hit 40 or more home runs in three different seasons. He could thrive in Reds home games.”
