The Red Sox are reportedly among the leading contenders to sign Alex Bregman, but a top industry insider believes Boston should only pursue the deal if Bregman is open to switching positions.

There are differing reports about whether Boston would sign Bregman to play third base, where he won an AL Gold Glove last season, or second base. If Bregman plays third, the Red Sox would need to shift star third baseman Rafael Devers to first base and likely trade Triston Casas.

However, during a recent NESN interview, manager Alex Cora emphasized that Devers remains Boston’s cornerstone at third base while highlighting Bregman’s potential to play second. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi echoed this sentiment, suggesting the Red Sox should sign Bregman for second base.

“I agree with Cora … and see how Bregman could benefit the Red Sox, both defensively and in the lineup,” Morosi said on MLB Network. “He would complement Rafael Devers’ lefty bat perfectly. If Bregman is willing to play second, he’d be an excellent fit given Boston’s commitment to Devers.”

Shifting Bregman to second base, however, could create its own issues. Kristian Campbell, a consensus top-10 prospect, has been groomed as a second baseman. While Campbell can play multiple positions, Boston already has a surplus of talent on the left side of the infield and in the outfield, forcing difficult roster decisions.

Ultimately, the question remains: is signing a 30-year-old Bregman, coming off one of his worst statistical seasons, worth the potential complications? The answer is still up for debate.
