A recurring theme in the New York Mets depth chart under David Stearns’ leadership is the inclusion of backup catchers who can also play other positions.

While the Mets have yet to utilize this approach at the major league level, they might have an opportunity to explore it further with a recently DFA’d player who has spent the past few seasons with the San Francisco Giants.

Blake Sabol, who just turned 27, is now available on waivers. A trade with the Giants could ensure that Sabol ends up in Syracuse, providing the Mets with additional catching depth.

The organization has already brought in Jakson Reetz and Chris Williams, both of whom have experience playing in the outfield as well as catching. Sabol could be the next addition to this versatile group.

Blake Sabol has actually hit some at the major league level, setting him apart from other catchers the Mets added this offseason

The .243/.313/.392 slash line with 13 home runs in 382 plate appearances he brings to the table isn’t enough to push Luis Torrens off the roster. However, it provides valuable insurance if Torrens continues to struggle, as he did late in 2024. Having a catcher who can throw out base runners is a significant asset, but is it worth sacrificing offensive production?

This is where Sabol falls short. In a limited sample of 65 innings behind the plate last year, all 11 attempted base stealers were successful against him. That said, he performed much better in the minors, throwing out 35% of attempted base stealers.

Interestingly, Sabol played more as an outfielder than a catcher during his college days. His original team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, regularly used him at both positions early in his career. When he debuted in the majors in 2023 with the Giants, he caught 55 games and played 43 in left field. This versatility could be a valuable asset for the Mets, allowing them to give Francisco Alvarez more regular opportunities at DH.

In 2023, Sabol hit .236/.301/.394 with 13 home runs over 344 plate appearances for the Giants. With minor league options still available, he’s a player the Mets should consider.
