JUST IN: Walker Buehler Land Most Notably Houston Astros’ Baseman To Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have been highly active this offseason, with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow making waves in both the trade market and free agency. Despite several roster additions, Breslow’s primary target remains free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman.

Bregman, arguably the top free agent still available, has raised eyebrows by remaining unsigned. His contract demands might be a factor. In 2024, the star slugger posted a .260/.315/.453 slash line with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, but a return to the Houston Astros appears unlikely.

The Red Sox face stiff competition for Bregman’s services, particularly from the Detroit Tigers. To bolster their efforts, Boston has enlisted some extra help. According to Greg Dudek of NESN, newly signed pitcher Walker Buehler has been lobbying Bregman to join the team throughout the offseason.

“I’ve definitely made my pitch for him to come to Boston,” Buehler said. “We’ve been friends for a long time, playing together on Team USA back in college.”

Buehler joined the Red Sox on a one-year, $21 million deal in December after winning the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two-time All-Star pitcher shares such a close bond with Bregman that the two even co-own a horse.

Boston is eager to add a right-handed bat to balance its lefty-heavy lineup. The team previously pursued Teoscar Hernández, who ultimately stayed in Los Angeles. Now, Bregman tops their wish list, although Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado remains a potential trade target.
