On Monday night, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported a blockbuster deal involving the Los Angeles Dodgers trading infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds. In return, the Dodgers are set to receive outfield prospect Mike Sirota and a competitive balance draft pick.
Lux is expected to join the Reds’ roster alongside Elly De La Cruz and manager Terry Francona, as Cincinnati looks to contend for the National League Central title.
However, Lux’s destination may not be final. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden confirmed the trade details but added an intriguing twist—there’s a possibility the Reds could flip Lux to the New York Yankees before he even suits up for Cincinnati.
“The Dodgers-Reds trade is a one-for-one deal: Gavin Lux to the Reds for outfielder Mike Sirota. There’s a chance Lux could be moved to the Yankees, so stay tuned,” Bowden shared on Twitter/X Monday night. He later clarified that, as of now, the Reds have no plans to trade Lux.

The Yankees were seen as a strong contender for Lux prior to his trade to Cincinnati. Adding him to their roster would address a pressing need in their infield, particularly given their expensive offseason. For the Reds to part ways with Lux at this stage, they’d likely require established major-league talent in return. With Francona at the helm, Cincinnati’s focus remains on making win-now moves, and acquiring Lux fits that strategy.
If the Yankees remain interested, outfield prospect Everson Pereira could be a trade piece to consider. Pereira would address a greater need for Cincinnati, though he’s less proven compared to Lux.
For now, Lux is on his way to Cincinnati, and the Yankees will have to explore other options to bolster their infield.
