The San Francisco Giants are on the hunt for an ace pitcher. While the free-agent market has slim pickings, they still have the option to explore the trade market.

Currently, Logan Webb is the presumed leader of the Giants’ rotation. After finishing the 2024 season with a disappointing 80-82 record, the team is well aware of the need to strengthen the roster.

Buster Posey, the Giants’ president of baseball operations, made his first major move by signing Willy Adames. Now, he could turn to the trade market to make another splash—this time by targeting Luis Castillo.

Castillo comes with three years of guaranteed team control and a vesting option for 2028. While the Mariners aren’t actively shopping him, moving Castillo and freeing up $24 million over the next three years could allow Seattle to invest in elite hitters.

A potential trade might look like this:

Giants Receive: SP Luis Castillo
Mariners Receive: OF James Tibbs III (Giants No. 2 prospect), RHP Mason Black (Giants No. 8 prospect), and OF Wade Meckler (Giants No. 15 prospect)

The Giants appear unwilling to part with their top prospect, Bryce Eldridge, but Posey will still need to offer a significant package for a pitcher of Castillo’s caliber.

While Mason Black struggled during his initial stint in the majors late in 2024, the Mariners have a proven track record of developing pitchers. Wade Meckler, on the other hand, would give Seattle an outfielder with exceptional on-base skills.

Although it might be challenging for the Giants to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in Posey’s first year at the helm, a move like this would help set the foundation for a competitive future.
