The Boston Red Sox have already bolstered their pitching staff this offseason, acquiring Garrett Crochet via trade and Walker Buehler through free agency. However, there’s still room for further upgrades, especially with Boston’s surplus of expendable talent.

The San Diego Padres are reportedly open to trading their ace, Dylan Cease, particularly if they secure Roki Sasaki. The Red Sox could be an ideal trade partner.

One potential trade could see Boston sending a package centered around first baseman Triston Casas to acquire Cease. Trading Casas would allow the Red Sox to move Rafael Devers to first base and pursue a replacement like Nolan Arenado or Alex Bregman.

Guardians Predicted to Swing Shocking Trade for Superstar Pitcher

Here’s a possible trade scenario:

Boston Red Sox receive:

  • RHP Dylan Cease

San Diego Padres receive:

  • 1B Triston Casas
  • RHP Richard Fitts (No. 10 prospect)
  • INF Mikey Romero (No. 12 prospect)

Triston Casas, despite dealing with injuries last season, remains a highly valuable trade asset. When healthy, he has the potential for an .800 or .900 OPS, combining a powerful bat with good athleticism and consistent pop. At just 24 years old and under team control for several more seasons, Casas is an attractive centerpiece for a deal.

Richard Fitts, a promising pitching prospect, could help replace Cease in the Padres’ rotation. He recorded a 1.74 ERA over 20 2/3 innings in the majors last season, showcasing his potential.

Mikey Romero, a 20-year-old former first-round pick, adds another high-upside piece to the deal. Despite some struggles in 2023, Romero has shown flashes of talent and could develop into a valuable infielder for San Diego.

With a deep minor league system, the Red Sox are well-positioned to part with some of their talent to strengthen their pitching and contend for a title in 2025. If they can also land Arenado or Bregman, moving Casas to acquire Cease would be a strategic move.
