The Houston Astros made waves on Friday afternoon, reportedly agreeing to a three-year, $60 million contract with Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. Before committing to Houston, Walker had been a key target for the New York Yankees.
With this significant signing, the Astros will need to free up some payroll, likely parting ways with several players in free agency.
FanSided’s Cody Williams recently speculated that Houston might cut ties with veteran starter this offseason, especially after committing to Walker’s substantial deal.
“He recorded a 5.48 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 17 starts this past season and never seemed to find his rhythm, let alone return to the dominant form he’s shown throughout his career,” Williams noted. “This shift away from familiar faces underscores the Astros’ intention to move in a new direction.

“Considering Verlander’s age and the growing concerns about his durability and remaining potential, any chance of him returning to Houston appears to be off the table.”
Last season, the Astros paid Verlander over $40 million for what turned out to be subpar performance.
As the 2024 season concluded, it became evident that Verlander’s time in Houston had likely come to an end. While the legendary right-hander may find a new home elsewhere, it seems certain that it won’t be with the Astros.
