The Boston Red Sox made a big move by acquiring ace Garrett Crochet in a major trade earlier this offseason, but they haven’t been active since. Although they had a $700 million offer for free agent Juan Soto, they haven’t shifted their focus to another plan with that money.
Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley recently suggested that the Red Sox might use some of their funds to sign free-agent slugger Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles. Jon Heyman of the New York Post forecasts that Santander could sign a $100 million contract after his standout 2024 season, where he hit 44 home runs.
“Anthony Santander had 44 reasons to believe a major payday was coming his way this offseason,” Buckley wrote, referring to his career-high 44 homers, which were far and away his best performance to date. In addition to the home runs, he also recorded 91 runs and 102 RBIs, both team highs for the 91-win Orioles, earning him his first All-Star appearance and a Silver Slugger award.

Buckley added that while Santander may not land the massive deal he’s aiming for, he will still earn a substantial sum, particularly if the Red Sox are involved.
A move to the Red Sox could be a smart one. Boston still has plenty of money to spend, and if they don’t secure one of the top pitchers, shifting focus to a high-impact bat like Santander could be a logical move.
