The Boston Red Sox are aiming to improve their pitching staff, which ranked in the lower half of MLB in 2024.

Last season, they finished 17th in ERA (4.04), 12th in home runs allowed (189), and 20th in opponents’ batting average (.246).

To strengthen their rotation, the Red Sox made a major trade, acquiring All-Star ace Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for four prospects, including Kyle Teel and 2024 first-round pick Braden Montgomery.

Along with Crochet, their projected rotation includes Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Additionally, the Red Sox have signed a starting pitcher to a two-year deal, also coming off Tommy John surgery.

Multiple reports, including ESPN’s Jeff Passan, have confirmed that the Boston Red Sox have signed left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval to a two-year contract worth $18.25 million.

Sandoval is expected to return in the second half of the 2025 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

In 2023, Sandoval made only 16 starts for the Los Angeles Angels due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

Across six seasons with the Angels, Sandoval appeared in 107 games (100 of them as a starter), posting a 19-45 record with a 4.01 ERA, 529 strikeouts in 536 innings, and a 108 ERA+.
