Earlier this offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers traded star closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees, which significantly impacted the trade market. This move has paved the way for the St. Louis Cardinals to consider trading their own elite closer.
SBNation’s John Stolnis believes the Cardinals might explore this possibility, suggesting they could move Helsley before the start of 2025 spring training.
“Like (Framber) Valdez, Helsley is set to become a free agent after the upcoming season. With the Cardinals focusing on retooling or rebuilding for the future, Helsley’s value as one of the game’s best closers last season lies more in his trade potential than his on-field contributions in 2025,” Stolnis wrote.
“The 30-year-old posted a stellar 2.04 ERA across a league-high 62 games finished, leading MLB with 49 saves. He also placed 9th in Cy Young voting and boasts a remarkable 1.83 ERA over the past three seasons, with a 225/60 K/BB ratio in 152 games (167 2/3 innings). For teams needing a dominant ninth-inning arm, Helsley is arguably a better option than Williams was before his trade to New York.”

Once the top free-agent closers, such as Tanner Scott, find new teams, Helsley’s trade value is expected to surge. At that point, the Cardinals could become more receptive to offers for him.
For now, general manager John Mozeliak seems intent on keeping Helsley in St. Louis. However, the Cardinals’ front office may eventually recognize that trading him sooner rather than later, especially after Scott signs, would maximize their return.
