A major trade with the Red Sox could boost the Mariners’ efforts to acquire Christian Walker.
The MLB rumor mill is buzzing, and one player drawing significant attention in free agency is star first baseman Christian Walker. With many marquee names already signed, teams are shifting their focus to Walker, who appears to be the top free-agent target for the Seattle Mariners. However, his current price tag seems to be beyond their budget, prompting speculation about a potential blockbuster trade involving the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox, despite recently acquiring Garrett Crochet, are still in need of pitching this offseason. Meanwhile, the Mariners boast a surplus of high-caliber starters they might consider trading. Rumors suggest Boston could target Luis Castillo in a trade, which would help Seattle free up financial flexibility to pursue Walker.

Peter Gammons shared on X (formerly Twitter): “The hitter the Mariners would love to get is Christian Walker, which for now is out of their price range. As another GM suggested this morning, ‘Craig Breslow is tireless, he’s really smart, and if he can clear Castillo’s money, give Seattle help elsewhere and allow them to get Walker, maybe he gets Castillo.’”
Should Mariners trade Luis Castillo to Red Sox, pursue Christian Walker?
The Red Sox and Mariners have been in talks for a while about a potential trade involving a starting pitcher, but no deal has come together yet. Boston reportedly offered first baseman Triston Casas to Seattle, but the proposal didn’t gain much traction. This could be due to the Mariners’ interest in acquiring Walker, and if Seattle needs to shed some salary, it might pave the way for the Red Sox to pursue Luis Castillo.
However, the Mariners aren’t likely to part with Castillo, an ace-caliber pitcher, without a significant return, and trading him just to improve their chances of landing Walker would be a major gamble. Despite this, Boston remains persistent in their efforts to secure a pitcher from Seattle, and this approach could potentially lead to their second big trade for a starter this offseason.
