The first major free agent signing of the MLB offseason is here, and it’s not Juan Soto.

Shortstop Willy Adames has agreed to a seven-year, $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, as first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN. The agreement, which includes a $22 million signing bonus, is pending a physical.

BREAKING: Shortstop Willy Adames and the San Francisco Giants have reached a seven-year, $182 million contract, the largest in franchise history, sources confirm to ESPN. Adames, 29, had a career-high 32 home runs and 112 RBIs in 2024. The deal is pending a physical.

This contract marks the largest in Giants history, highlighting the team’s determination to make a major splash this offseason after previous misses. Their pursuit of Carlos Correa two years ago famously fell apart due to a failed physical, and their bid for Aaron Judge last winter also fell short.

Adames may finally provide the infield stability the Giants have been seeking. Last season, he hit .251 with 32 home runs and 21 stolen bases for Milwaukee. Although there had been speculation about him potentially moving to third base, joining the Giants should allow him to remain at his preferred position of shortstop.

Seen as a fallback option for teams targeting Juan Soto, Adames’ signing could raise the stakes for clubs still vying for the star outfielder.
