The New York Mets made a notable move in free agency on Sunday evening, securing a key addition to their starting rotation for the 2025 season.

As reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets have agreed to a two-year, $34 million deal with veteran right-hander, pending a physical.

Montas, 31, brings nine years of MLB experience. He began the 2024 season with the Cincinnati Reds before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers at the deadline. Over 30 starts, he posted a 4.84 ERA with 148 strikeouts in 150 2/3 innings.

This marks Montas’s second time pitching in New York, as he previously played for the Yankees. However, injuries limited him to just nine appearances across parts of two seasons. Before his stint with the Yankees, he spent six seasons with the Oakland Athletics.

Meanwhile, the Mets remain in the hunt for top free-agent outfielder Juan Soto, the most sought-after player on the market. Despite their focus on Soto, they’ve bolstered their roster with strategic additions like Montas, who could play a vital role even as he looks to return to peak form.
