The Boston Red Sox were actively involved in free agency talks with San Francisco Giants ace Blake Snell. However, Snell ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving Boston in need of an ace to fill his potential role.

Mark Powell of FanSided proposed a trade to address this gap, suggesting the Red Sox acquire Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet.

Phillies loaded Garrett Crochet trade still isn't good enough for the White Sox

Here’s the deal Powell outlined:

Boston Red Sox receive: LHP Garrett Crochet
Chicago White Sox receive: OF Wilyer Abreu, OF Braden Montgomery (No. 5 prospect), OF Jhostynxon Garcia (No. 12 prospect), LHP Connelly Early (No. 24 prospect)

“Red Sox fans may not love this proposal, but it’s a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency scenario,” Powell explained. He emphasized that while Boston would prefer to avoid parting with top-100 prospects, such a trade might be unrealistic without including them. Montgomery, ranked No. 54 by MLB Pipeline, is a standout prospect but is currently behind Roman Anthony and potentially Kristian Campbell in Boston’s depth chart.

The Red Sox would be reluctant to trade this package, particularly Montgomery, their 2024 first-round pick and a highly regarded position player in the draft class. Garcia and Early are also notable assets—Early has a 4.00 ERA across 24 minor league starts, and Garcia delivered an OPS near .900 last season. Meanwhile, Abreu remains a valuable young outfielder for Boston.

While this trade could become viable if Boston’s options dwindle, the team is expected to prioritize pursuing free-agent pitchers before considering parting with Montgomery in a deal for Crochet.
