The Boston Red Sox have struggled through several underwhelming seasons, failing to surpass 81 wins in a single year since 2022 and making only one playoff appearance since 2019. However, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy signaled on Wednesday that the team is prepared to spend aggressively this offseason. Could this determination lead to Boston signing ace in free agency?

“Even if it takes us over the CBT, our priority is 90 to 95 wins, winning the American League East, and dominating the division for years to come,” Kennedy stated. “There’s an intense sense of urgency within the organization to contend for the division title and set ourselves up for a deep postseason run in 2025.”

To achieve this goal, the Red Sox will need to make substantial investments in their roster, particularly in the starting rotation.

Corbin Burnes is the Orioles' new rotation ace

“Every team benefits from having an ace who can win a critical game or a playoff matchup,” said Craig Breslow, president of baseball operations, in an October 2 interview with The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey. “We saw growth from several rotation members like Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford, but we also recognize the need for improvement and will explore all opportunities to get better.”

This focus could pave the way for Burnes to join Boston on a lucrative deal. Ryan Finkelstein of JustBaseball predicts the Red Sox might offer the right-hander an eight-year, $232 million contract.

Such a move would shake up the AL East, as Burnes spent 2024 with the Baltimore Orioles, compiling a 15-9 record with a 2.92 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 181 strikeouts over 194 1/3 innings before entering free agency.
