The Boston Red Sox are prioritizing pitching upgrades this offseason after their rotation faltered late last season. While their lineup was competitive, the rotation and bullpen remain the biggest areas of need.

The team is also expected to make improvements to the lineup, but pitching is the primary focus. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer ranked the Red Sox as the second-most likely destination for Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried, although they could arguably be the top contender for his signature.

“Boston has struggled for years with starting pitching,” Rymer noted. “While Breslow made progress early in 2024, the latter half of the season underscored how challenging it is to achieve sustainable success with stopgap solutions. Adding proven talent, like Fried, is essential.”

The Red Sox have the resources and determination to make a significant addition. With Fried on board, they could field a team capable of contending for a World Series title.

Boston also has a unique advantage in pursuing Fried. He was high school teammates with current Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito and free-agent starter Jack Flaherty. If the Red Sox can secure the necessary funds, reuniting the trio in Boston could be a compelling draw for Fried.
