Former Florida State standout Cam Smith has officially signed with the Chicago Cubs. According to Carlos Collazo of Baseball America, the Cubs have agreed to a contract worth $5.07 million with their first-round draft pick as of Saturday afternoon.

Smith, who joined Florida State in 2023, made a notable impact right away. Over 51 games, he posted a .258 batting average, with 54 hits, eight doubles, five triples, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, and 39 runs scored. He ranked second on the team in runs, hits, and walks (21).

In 2024, Smith advanced significantly as a top prospect, leading the Seminoles with a .387 average and striking out only 48 times in 269 at-bats. He added 16 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 82 runs scored to his tally.

His performance played a crucial role in Florida State reaching the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2019. Smith hit two home runs in consecutive games against UCF during the NCAA regionals, went 5-for-9 against UConn in the super regionals, and hit a double in each of his first two College World Series games, also scoring a run in a win against North Carolina.

Smith expressed his excitement on the 11Point7 podcast, saying, “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always been a Florida State fan, and just to know inside that I’m playing for Florida State baseball with this uniform on in Omaha, there’s nothing better.”

Smith previously played high school baseball at Palm Beach Central in Wellington, Florida, where he was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Florida and the No. 53 overall prospect nationally by Perfect Game.

Cam Smith details what he brings to MLB

Smith stands out for his self-awareness regarding his strengths and weaknesses. “One thing about me is that anything I hit is pretty much to the opposite field,” Smith said while mic’d up during MCWS batting practice at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, according to MLB.com. “I focus on hitting to the opposite field to stay inside the ball. You’ll rarely see me pull the ball in batting practice.”

Smith was a top 100 prospect leading up to the 2022 MLB Draft. His performances at Florida State and the Cape Cod League contributed to his No. 14 ranking by MLB this year.

Smith’s scouting report highlights his current strength and potential. “How consistently he can access his plus raw power will depend on his hitting ability, and he has answered that question effectively over the past summer and this spring.”
