On the first day of the 2024 MLB offseason, the New York Mets have brought a new pitcher onto their roster.

Mets ink veteran RHP to 1-year deal

On Thursday afternoon, the Mets shared via their official X account that they have signed right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey to a one-year contract. Covey brings five years of Major League experience, having debuted in 2017 with the Chicago White Sox. He spent the first three years of his MLB career as a starter, later transitioning to a bullpen role in 2020 with the Boston Red Sox.

 

 

Covey has a mixed bag of experience as a starter & reliever

In his career, the 33-year-old has started 46 games, achieving a record of 5-27 with a 6.94 ERA and 154 strikeouts. In contrast, he has appeared in 54 games as a reliever, where he has a record of 2-5, a 4.33 ERA, and 60 strikeouts. In 2023, he had his best season to date, posting a 3.77 ERA and striking out 30 batters over 43 innings pitched.

As a result, the Mets are adding experienced players to their roster as they work to refine a team that reached the National League Championship Series in 2024, ultimately falling to the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. He’ll be a pitcher to keep an eye on in case New York loses important starters or relievers during free agency.
