The New York Mets may consider acquiring a high-priced starting pitcher at a low cost as part of a reclamation project as they prepare for the 2025 season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a significant error by signing left-handed pitcher to a contract valued at approximately $50 million. Even members of the Diamondbacks’ front office have acknowledged that bringing Montgomery on board was a mistake.

Moving on from him may prove challenging unless they find a team willing to invest in reviving His career. The New York Mets could be a prime candidate, as they have a reputation for successfully revitalizing struggling pitchers.

This season, the Mets managed to revamp the careers of Luis Severino and Sean Manaea, both of whom had impressive performances compared to their previous years.

Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report recently identified players from each team who could be potential trade candidates this offseason, naming Jordan Montgomery for the Diamondbacks.

“Rather than retaining the 31-year-old, the best option for all parties would be a trade that allows him to start fresh elsewhere. The D-backs might need to cover part of his 2025 salary to make a deal happen, but likely not the full amount,” Rymer noted.

For the Diamondbacks to trade Montgomery to the Mets, they will need to cover a portion of his contract. Let’s say they absorb half of what remains on his deal.

In this scenario, Montgomery and some cash would go to the Mets in exchange for Dom Hamel, ranked 15th among prospects, and Nick Morabito, ranked 19th.

Hamel, 25, is considered an older prospect. He performed well in his first two full professional seasons, recording ERAs of 3.25 and 3.85. However, last year, his ERA soared above 6.00. He possesses several strong pitches, particularly his slider, and seemed ready for the majors until his recent struggles. A trade to the Diamondbacks could be just what he needs to revitalize his career.

Morabito, 21, had a stellar season in Low-A and High-A last year. Over 119 games, he posted a .312/.403/.398 batting line, along with 17 doubles and 59 stolen bases. While he may not be regarded as an elite hitter, his on-base percentage over .400 shows he can consistently get on base, and his speed can be game-changing. His presence alone can impact any game.

Montgomery, now 31, had a disappointing season with a 6.23 ERA, marking the worst full-season ERA of his career. Prior to that, he maintained a sub-4.00 ERA for three consecutive seasons, including an impressive stint with the Texas Rangers that helped lead them to the 2023 World Series. A change of scenery might be just what he needs, and the Mets could provide the ideal environment for a turnaround.
