On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts designated Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to return from injured reserve. While he will technically remain on injured reserve for now, this designation opens up a 21-day window during which he can practice with the team. If he’s not activated by the end of this period, he will stay on injured reserve for the remainder of the 2024 season. Buckner can be activated at any time within the 21-day window.

Buckner’s return, whether it happens this week or later, is expected to significantly boost the Colts’ defense, as he’s a key player at the 3-technique position. So far in 2024, Buckner has recorded 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 3 quarterback pressures in his two starts.

During Buckner’s absence, the Colts have rotated veterans Taven Bryan, Ade Adebawore, and Dayo Odeyingbo at the 3-technique spot, but none have been able to match the production of the two-time NFL All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler.
Buckner is known for his quickness, strength, and athleticism, which make him a disruptive force as an interior pass rusher. His presence has also been missed in the run defense, where he excels at shedding blocks and stopping the run.
Although a return this weekend against the AFC South-leading Houston Texans might be too soon, having Buckner back would be a major advantage as the Colts aim to regain control of the division and avoid a season sweep by C.J. Stroud and the Texans.
It’s also worth mentioning that Colts linebacker Cameron McGrone (elbow) was designated to return from injured reserve alongside Buckner, as reported by The Athletic’s James Boyd.
