The Mets have agreed to a major league deal with catcher Logan Porter, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 on X. The deal for the Gaeta Sports Management client is pending a physical. Porter has options, so he may not immediately join the active roster, but it seems he will secure a spot on the 40-man roster, necessitating a roster move by the Mets.

Logan Porter continues to be KC Royals fans' favorite minor leaguer

Porter, 29, mostly played for the Royals until recently. He signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and briefly appeared in the majors last year, playing in 13 games. After being non-tendered at the end of the season, he re-signed with the Royals on a minor league deal. About a month ago, the Giants acquired him in a cash deal, but Porter opted out of his contract on Tuesday. The Giants could have kept him by adding him to their roster, but instead, they let him go, and now the Mets will be giving him that roster spot.

In the majors last year, Porter hit just .194/.324/.323 in 38 plate appearances. However, his minor league performance has been much more impressive, with a slash line of .277/.401/.466 over 1,766 plate appearances, translating to a 131 wRC+. This year, he has hit .293/.390/.500 for a 127 wRC+, though his performance has varied. He hit .319/.428/.575 with the Royals but only .253/.329/.387 after being traded to the Giants in 85 plate appearances. Nonetheless, his overall performance has been strong enough to attract interest from the Mets.

The Mets currently have Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens as their catchers at the major league level. Alvarez, a top prospect, has performed well in the majors, hitting .231/.305/.450 with a 110 wRC+ and strong defensive grades. Torrens, who joined the team six weeks ago, has been excellent, hitting .283/.333/.547 with a 149 wRC+, significantly better than his career line of .231/.292/.367. The Mets are likely to continue relying on Torrens’ hot streak.

Porter will add optionable depth to the Mets’ catching roster once his deal is official, providing coverage in case of injuries to Alvarez or Torrens. With full options and minimal service time, Porter could be a long-term asset for the Mets if he retains his roster spot. Additionally, his experience at first and third base could allow him to develop into a utility player if he continues to hit well.
