Happy weekend, San Francisco Giants fans! While there won’t be any Giants baseball for a while, you can still enjoy plenty of postseason action, whether it’s baseball, the 49ers seeking a bit of revenge, big college football matchups, or the winner-take-all Game 5 in the WNBA Finals.
On Friday, the Giants shared some offseason news. As reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the team officially announced that J.P. Martinez has been promoted to pitching coach for the 2025 season. Martinez, who has been the assistant pitching coach for four seasons, steps in following Bryan Price’s departure after one year back from retirement.
Martinez is highly regarded for his teaching abilities, use of analytics, and connection with players. His bilingual skills will also be valuable, especially with pitchers like Randy Rodríguez and Camilo Doval. Congratulations, J.P.!
Now, we’ll wait to see who the Giants choose as their next assistant pitching coach — my guess is Ryan Vogelsong.
In other baseball news, the Championship Series rolls on this weekend. On Saturday, the New York Yankees, up 3-1, face the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALCS at 5:08 p.m. PT (TBS, truTV, and Max). Carlos Rodón, a former Giant, takes the mound for New York, while Cleveland counters with Tanner Bibee.
Sunday brings Game 6 of the NLCS, back in Los Angeles, with the Dodgers leading 3-2 over the New York Mets. The Dodgers haven’t announced a starter and will likely rely on a bullpen game, while former Giant Sean Manaea starts for the Mets. Go get ‘em, Sean — beat LA!
