The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without edge rusher for a few weeks due to a groin injury. While they aim to build on their 3-0 start, dealing with mounting injuries could pose a challenge. However, there’s optimism that Highsmith will return before the end of the regular season.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the injury is “not considered major,” and Highsmith won’t require surgery. With the Steelers’ bye week falling in Week 9, he could return around midseason with ample recovery time.
In the first three games, Highsmith recorded 11 combined tackles, one sack, and one pass defended, ranking seventh in defensive snaps for the team.
Steelers to be without Alex Highsmith for weeks
T.J. Watt is leading the Steelers’ defense and will take on an even greater role with Alex Highsmith out, alongside Cameron Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and Larry Ogunjobi. Outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon, who began the season on injured reserve, will be eligible to return after Week 4. He and Nick Herbig, a 2023 fourth-round pick with 2.0 sacks this season and 3.0 last year, are expected to step up.
Highsmith, who missed time during training camp with a groin injury, told ESPN he’s evaluating his offseason training to prevent further issues. “Ultimately, I need to review my summer training routine,” he said. “I work hard, but some things need to change.”
While Justin Fields’ leadership on offense is a positive, the Steelers’ defense is the key to their undefeated record. With upcoming games against the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh needs to find new ways to generate quarterback pressure.
