The Montreal Canadiens are approaching the conclusion of their rebuild, and a proposed trade could see them acquiring a star forward.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, which allows users to create hypothetical trades, one fan suggested a trade where the Canadiens would acquire Him from the San Jose Sharks.

In this proposal, Montreal would receive Him and a draft pick in exchange for two of their own picks, a deal that appears beneficial for both teams.

Granlund, a former first-round pick, is in the final year of his four-year, $20 million contract. Last season with the Sharks, he posted 12 goals and 48 assists, totaling 60 points in 69 games.

He could slot in as Montreal’s third-line center, offering depth and a backup option behind Kirby Dach, who has dealt with injury issues. The deal would also come at a low cost for the Canadiens, and if they are out of playoff contention, they could potentially move Him at the trade deadline to regain assets.

Canadiens Coach Expects More From his Team

Martin St. Louis has returned as the head coach of the Canadiens, with Montreal extending his contract for another three seasons.

Despite missing the playoffs last season, St. Louis believes expectations are significantly higher this year. He acknowledges the roster is difficult to make and addressed speculation about his coaching style, saying, “People are asking if I’ll be tougher this season. I think my players understand that I always speak my truth, and this year’s truth might differ slightly from last year’s because we’ve made progress. I strive to be fair in my expectations.”

He added, “Do I expect more from them this year? Absolutely. That applies to the team, but also to each individual, as they’re at different points in their careers. However, the non-negotiables remain the same for everyone.”

The Canadiens will begin their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 9, facing the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Granlund an Assistant Captain for the Sharks

On Sunday, San Jose announced its leadership team, with Logan Couture continuing as captain, a role he’s held since the 2019-20 season.

The Sharks’ assistant captains for the 2024-25 season include Barclay Goodrow, Mikael Granlund, Luke Kunin, and Tyler Toffoli. Granlund and Kunin will wear the ‘A’ on the road, while Goodrow and Toffoli will don it at home.

“We’re very fortunate to have a fantastic group of talented, high-character players leading us this season, with Logan Couture as our captain,” said coach Ryan Warsofsky. “Each of these players brings unique qualities, showing leadership both by example and as an extension of our coaching staff.”

The Sharks will kick off their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the St. Louis Blues.
