‘My heart goes out to him’: Aussie punter Cameron Johnston cops ‘serious’ injury blow in Steelers debut

Cameron Johnston, the Australian NFL star and one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ key offseason additions, may see his season cut short. The 32-year-old former AFL prospect signed a three-year, $13.46 million deal in March to become the team’s primary punter.
However, his debut with the Steelers on Monday (AEST) took a bad turn when Johnston was involved in a rough play during the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh’s 18-10 victory over the Falcons. After punting from deep in his own end, he was hit by an opposing player, and now faces a potential long-term absence.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expressed concern, stating, “Cam Johnston appears to have a serious injury. I’ll have an update next time we meet. It’s unfortunate for him.” Tomlin praised Johnston’s impact on the team, calling him “spectacular” and commending his approach and professionalism.
While quarterbacks Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins were the main attractions heading into their regular season debuts for their new teams, Steelers kicker Chris Boswell stole the show by scoring all 18 of Pittsburgh’s points with six field goals and stepping in as a punter in Johnston’s absence.
Tomlin praised Boswell, saying, “I can’t say enough about Bos, not only for his kicking, but that punt was timely.” Despite being without starting quarterback Russell Wilson, Fields’ performance could raise questions about Wilson’s standing on the depth chart.
