Randy Mueller is making a return to the New Orleans Saints over two decades after his previous tenure with the team. According to Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com, the former general manager will rejoin the organization as a full-time advisor.

Mueller had already been involved with the team unofficially during the draft and training camp, and this new position will formalize his ongoing relationship with the Saints. He will work closely with GM Mickey Loomis, a longtime friend, primarily assisting the pro and college scouting departments.

Mueller, 63, served as the Saints’ GM during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, leading the team to its first playoff victory and earning Executive of the Year honors in his debut season. After being dismissed following a 7-9 season in 2001, Mueller was succeeded by Loomis, whom Mueller had hired. Loomis has held the GM role ever since.

Mueller’s next GM role came in 2005 with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent three seasons and posted a 16-32 record, including a disastrous 1-15 season in 2007. After leaving Miami, he joined the Chargers’ front office as senior executive of football operations from 2008 to 2018.

This move marks Mueller’s return to the NFL after his last front-office role with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons as director of player personnel. He will join Loomis this season as one of three former GMs working with the Saints, alongside Dave Ziegler, who was hired in June after serving as the Raiders’ GM, and Jeff Ireland, who succeeded Mueller as Dolphins GM and held that position until 2018.
